Most people skip Colombo and rush to the beaches and hill countryside, thinking there is little to see in Colombo. But there are unique places in the city worth checking out while in Sri Lanka.

 It is recommended to spend at least two to three days enjoying this magnificent city’s captivating sights and sounds and immerse yourself in its fascinating culture and history.

Day 01. Morning

01. Pettah Market

Start your day by visiting the Pettah market and the Red Mosque.

Pettah Market is the busiest and largest shopping place in the country. Since pettah is the wholesale market, shop owners from all parts of the country visit this market daily to purchase goods.

It is an exciting and vibrant destination to feel the local market experience in Sri Lanka.

 The labyrinth of narrow streets is lined with numerous shops and lots of people; you will easily lose your way here.

It’s easy to get lost in the narrow streets of Pettah with numerous shops, resulting in spending more time than intended.

Important Tips

01. Since the shops are open around 10.00 am, It is best to visit early in the morning, around 09.00 am, especially if you want to take beautiful images of this place, after that you can experience of hustle and bustle of the pettah.

02.  To stay safe at Pettah Market, keep a close eye on your belongings due to the busy streets.

03. This is the best place to try local foods at an affordable price.

04. Since Pettah Market is quite vast, creating a list of the items you wish to see and purchase is recommended to avoid excessive walking and getting tired.

05. Street vendors at Pettah Market tend to raise their prices upon spotting foreigners, so it’s best to avoid buying from them.

06. Most shop owners speak their native language, Tamil, but you can communicate with them in English.

07. If you don’t know where you are or where to purchase a certain items , feel free to ask the locals or shop owners, they will happily help you.

08. If someone offers to be your tour guide at Pettah Market, it’s best to decline their offer.

09. It’s recommended to avoid wandering around narrow and uncrowded areas at Pettah Market.

10. It is best to avoid visiting on Saturdays as most locals come here to purchase goods, and the streets are overcrowded.

11. Sunday is a holiday, and most shops are closed, but some are open until noon.

12. Bring a hat and sunscreen. It can get quite hot in Pettah Market, especially in the afternoon

02. Jamiul Alfar Mosque ( Red Mosque)

With its red and white candy-striped interior and exterior walls, it’s no wonder this unique building is one of the most Instagrammed place in Colombo. 

This visually stunning landmark located in the bustling Pettah area, the red mosque, also  local calls “Rathu palliye” in Sinhala language and “Samman Kottu palli” in Tamil language.

Built in 1909 this mosque once served as a reliable landmark for sailors approaching the port of Colombo until the Sambodhi Chaithya temple was built.

The mosque was built Indo-Saracenic architecture but differentiated from standard onion-shaped domes to pomegranate-shaped domes with unique red and white colour patterns.

Important Tips

01. The mosque has two entrances. The primary entrance is on 2nd Cross Street and is open to all visitors who wish to see the mosque. The second entrance is located on the main street and is only accessible to worshippers during prayer time.

02. Visitors must dress modestly before entering the mosque, covering their hair, arms, and legs as a sign of respect. This is a common practice in many mosques around the world.

03. If you are not dressed appropriately, a complete covering dress can be obtained free of charge at the gate.

04. Women are not permitted beyond the courtyard.

05. Due to its location in a busy shopping area, parking facilities near the mosque are unavailable.

06. A dedicated front desk is available to offer free mosque tours, allowing visitors to learn about its history and cultural significance.

07. If you want to get some fantastic Instagram shots of the mosque, try to go early in the morning before 8 or on a Sunday when fewer people are around. This way, you can take your time and snap some great photos.

08. The best place to capture the mosque’s beauty is at the intersection of 2nd cross street and  Bankshall Street.

03. The Wolvendaal Church

The Wolvendaal Church, founded in 1749, is one of the oldest protestant churches in Colombo and still serves its original purpose.

This remarkable Dutch Colonial-era building is a striking neoclassical facade, adorned with red and white, and designed as a St.Andrew’s cross, making it a unique historical building in Colombo.

01. The church is located one kilometre from Pettah

02. Apart from taking pictures of the building, there isn’t much to do or see here.

Once you have visited Pettah in the morning, visiting Gangaramaya temple in the afternoon is recommended. which is located 4 km from Pettah.

Day 01 : Afternoon

04. Gangaramaya Temple

The Gangaramaya Temple is one of Sri Lanka’s oldest and most significant Buddhist temple. 

The interior of this temple complex emanates tranquillity and serves as a place of devotion for both locals and tourists. 

Witness a vast collection of artefacts, statues, and artwork, and quietly observe monks carrying out their daily rituals. Don’t miss the towering holy Bodhi tree in this place.

05. Seema malakaya

Seema Malakaya is an ideal destination for tourists seeking a peaceful haven for relaxation and meditation. 

With its close proximity to City Centre Mall Colombo and just a short 3-minute walk from Gangaramaya temple, this retreat is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. 

Surrounded by the tranquil emerald waters of Beira Lake, Seema Malakaya provides a serene natural setting sure to soothe the soul.

 Initially constructed in the 19th century, the building eventually sank into the lake. However, in 1976, veteran Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa reconstructed it as an excellent example of Kandyan architecture and the reconstruction was funded by a Sri Lankan prominent Muslim businessman, S. H. Moosajee, and his wife, in memory of their son Ameer S. Moosajee.

07. Colombo Fort area

08. Galle face

A popular waterfront place and Colombo’s heartbeat. Nestled between the Galadari Hotel and Galle Face Green Hotel, it is the most popular relaxing spot for locals to picnic, fly kites, go on dates and grab some street food.

many people think there is not much to do in Galle’s face other than watching the evening, but there are a few nearby attractions you can explore while you are in the Galle face.

09. One Galle Face Mall

Located opposite the site of Galle Face is the newest trending shopping mall in Colombo; this massive shopping mall contains international and local stores, numerous restaurants and entertainment options.

If you want quick shopping, this is the perfect place. You can find a supermarket and fast food restaurants on the mall’s lower ground floor.

10. Old Parliament building

This beautiful building with a neo-baroque style and a lot of history used to be Sri Lanka’s parliament until 1983. Since then, it has been the home of the presidential secretariat and is situated directly opposite Galle Face.

Unfortunately, visitors are not permitted to enter the premises due to security reasons. Nevertheless, you can still appreciate the beauty and grandeur of the building from a distance.

11. Colombo Lighthouse

Located on Chaithya Road, only 800 meters from Galleface, The Colombo Lighthouse offers an incredible panoramic view of Galleface, Colombo Harbour, and the ongoing Colombo Port City project. 

Although not many activities are available, this charming spot is definitely worth visiting.

12. World Trade Centre

14. Viharamahadevi park

 It was initially named Victoria Park after Queen Victoria, but it was renamed Viharamahadevi Park, named after Queen Viharamahdevi, the mother of King Dutugemunu.

Park is located in the heart of Colombo, near several historical and essential places, such as the National Museum, the Town Hall, the Independence Memorial Hall, and the Colombo Public Library.

Viharamahadevi Park is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. It is a great place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The park is home to various trees and plants, as well as several statues and monuments.

This park is best visited from March to May, before the monsoon season, when most flowers bloom. 

It features well-landscaped gardens with various trees, flowers, lotus ponds, fountains, and a golden Buddha statue.

15. Townhall

This building serves as the headquarters of the Colombo Municipal Council and the office of the Mayor of Colombo and is a prominent landmark in the area.

16. Odel

Odel is the first and most prominent department store chain in Sri Lanka. It is largest and first store located near the town hall and is a popular tourist destination. The store offers various products, including fashion, homewares, electronics, and food.

 Founded by Otara Gunewardene, a visionary businesswoman who started selling factory garments and apparel from her car boot. 

The store has since become one of the most successful retail shop in Sri Lanka.

17. Colombo Museum

The building was built in the Italian style and is located in a magnificent location on a beautiful white building.

The museum is spread across two floors, with each room on the lower floor devoted to a specific era and each room on the top floor dedicated to a particular theme. The museum’s well-organized exhibits give visitors a good overview of Sri Lanka’s history.

18. Independence Memorial Hall
