Al Janoub Stadium History

Al Janoub Stadium, initially known as  Al-Wakrah Stadium, is a retractable roof football stadium.

The construction began in 2014 and lasted for five years. On May 16, 2019, the stadium officially inaugurated for the Amir Cup final between Al Sadd SC and Al-Duhail SC in front of 38,670 spectators. It’s the second World Cup Stadium to be finished, following Khalifa International Stadium.

The stadium also used for the semifinal of the 24th Arabian Gulf Cup in 2019, the final of the AFC Champions League in 2020, and six games of the FIFA Arab Cup in 2021.

Al Janoub Stadium Design

The late Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid worked with AECOM to design the stadium. It has curved postmodernist and neo-futurist architecture all over it.

Al Janoub Stadium was inspired; the outside looks like the sails of old Dhow boats, and the inside looks like a ship’s hull. To pay tribute to the sea faring traditions of living on the coast in Qatar, especially the fishing and pearl diving history of Al Wakrah.

The sun’s heat makes the thin, curved lines outside the arena shine and sparkle. However, they belie the interior’s coolness. An ingenious, custom-designed cooling system keeps visitors cool regardless of the weather outside.

Temperatures inside the stadium remained 10 degrees Celsius lower than those outside, demonstrating that the venue will be able to keep tens of thousands of spectators comfortable during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Al Janoub Stadium Legacy

Following the conclusion of the World Cup, the stadium’s upper decks, around  20,000 seats, will be given to help fund football development projects in other countries.

The remaining facility, which can accommodate 20,000 people, will be used for various sporting events, including football.

The stadium will be the centre of Al Wakrah’s sports scene during the legacy mode. Around the stadium, new facilities will be built, such as cycling and running tracks.

There will also be a mosque, a multipurpose indoor arena, a school, and a wedding hall in the precinct, among other community facilities.

Al Janoub Park is also near the stadium, with lots of places to relax and play areas for kids.
